Personal Work
This can be divided into three different areas: Landscape, Industrial and Still Life.
The themes of the landscape work are quite simply the natural elements such as frost, ice, woodland, sand, water and rock structures. Each image is as simple as possible to maintain the integrity of the subject. The Sand images, for example, rarely have any indication of scale and are quite abstract, more akin to aerial views of deserts and river deltas. Seen in isolation they can appear ambiguous, alluding to such things as muscle fibres or other organic growth.
The Industrial work is part of an ongoing collection, which looks at the hidden world of the industrial work place, both operational and disused. These places are unfamiliar and fascinating, rarely seen by most people. The abandoned places are dark dangerous spaces, often very unsettling but ultimately alluring.
The 'still life' work is specific and detailed, paring back any extraneous information to concentrate on what I find most interesting. These can be either ‘found still lifes’ seen in their natural environment or items that have been collected and brought back to the studio. Occasionally this type of work is shown as a series of several images, showing the subtle changes and fluidity of the subject.
Historically, I have produced several long-term projects. ‘Flooded Woodland’ explored an area of 'wet' woodland located on the edge of a lake in the Peak District, which explores the seasonal changes over the period of one year. This epic work of 14 huge panoramic images manually stitched together shows the visual transformation throughout the seasons of just one small area and highlights just how different the same place can appear when viewed over such a period of time. Urban River project was a 3 year project that presented a study of a longitudinal journey re-examining what was once one of the most heavily industrialised stretches of water in Britain from source-to sea.  This body of 73 photographs was exhibited in both public and private galleries including the Lowry Centre, Salford.
“At heart Royse is an explorer, but not one who has to travel far; instead he looks inside and in between the things we think we know. He is often driven to explore things close to home and reminds us that there is always something new to learn about the apparently familiar. With Royse's sense of aesthetics and skills as a photographer, this is always a pleasurable experience.”
